Why Businesses Screen Visitors With Descartes MK Denial
Savance Workplace now integrates with Descartes MK Denial, giving organizations a way to screen visitor names against denied-party, sanctions, and export-control lists during the visitor process.
If a possible match is found, authorized staff can review the result inside Savance Workplace before deciding how to proceed.
But why would an organization need to screen a visitor against these lists in the first place?
Who Needs Denied-Party Screening, and Why?
Governments restrict certain people and organizations from participating in specific business transactions or receiving controlled goods, technology, technical information, or services.
That makes denied-party screening particularly important for companies involved in areas such as aerospace and defense, advanced manufacturing, controlled technology, government work, and international trade.
The requirements depend on the organization and activity involved. For example, U.S. export regulations place compliance responsibilities on exporters and other parties involved in regulated transactions, and hiring an intermediary does not necessarily remove those responsibilities.
For a public example of how these requirements affect an aerospace manufacturer, Howmet Aerospace describes a global trade compliance program covering U.S. and international trade controls.
For companies operating in environments like these, restricted-party screening is part of managing compliance risk.
Why Screen a Visitor?
Most denied-party screening discussions focus on customers, suppliers, transactions, and shipments. But a visitor may also be entering a facility where controlled technology, technical data, manufacturing processes, government programs, or other sensitive resources are present.
That can make visitor check-in another appropriate point for screening.
The goal is not to treat every visitor as a threat. It is to identify someone who may require additional review before access is granted.
Government resources illustrate the range of information organizations may need to consider. The U.S. Consolidated Screening List brings together export-screening lists maintained by the Departments of Commerce, State, and Treasury. The Commerce Department separately maintains the Denied Persons List, while the Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control provides a Sanctions List Search tool for checking U.S. sanctions lists.
Bring Descartes MK Denial Into Visitor Check-In
Descartes MK Denial brings denied-party screening into the same process customers already use to manage visitors in Savance Workplace.
A visitor’s name can be screened automatically during the visitor process. If a provider returns a possible match, Savance Workplace presents the available information to authorized staff for review.
A possible match is not proof of identity or an automatic denial. Similar names and incomplete information can produce potential matches, so staff still need to evaluate the result according to their organization’s policies.
Screening can run during staff-assisted sign-in, visitor self check-in, kiosk sign-in, and visitor activity initiated through the Visitor Management Outlook Add-In for the new Outlook.
Previous screening activity can also remain associated with the person for later review.
Use More Than One Screening Source
Descartes MK Denial is not the only screening option available in Savance Workplace.
It joins Checkr Trust, and organizations can enable more than one provider. When multiple providers are active, Savance Workplace runs the checks in parallel and combines potential matches for staff review.
Different providers can address different screening needs. Descartes MK Denial focuses on denied-party, sanctions, and export-control screening, while broader background and watchlist screening can identify other types of records. Checkr’s international screening services, for example, can include government watchlists and sanctions sources.
The FBI Most Wanted database is another example of a public source covering wanted individuals across categories such as fugitives, terrorism, counterintelligence, and white-collar crime.
Together, these kinds of sources illustrate why organizations may need more than one type of screening depending on their security, compliance, and risk requirements.
Add Screening Without Adding Another Manual Step
For organizations that already need denied-party screening, the value of the Descartes integration is straightforward: the check can happen as part of visitor management rather than as a separate process outside Savance Workplace.
That gives compliance, security, and front-desk teams another way to identify visitors who may need review while keeping the result connected to the visitor record.
