Background:

Motor City Electric Company is an employee-owned electrical contracting company in the state of Michigan, and provides services for anything from high-voltage utilities to control systems and automation. Since its inception in 1952, Motor City Electric has established itself as a leader in the United States electrical contracting space.

Problem:

With a 100,000 square foot service center consisting of custom fabricating and warehouse space, being able to properly track visitors and contractors that come to their building is imperative; however, MCE found it was not doing as well as it should have. “We needed a better way to track visitors throughout the building,” states Marc Spontack, Project Manager at Motor City Electric, and explains that the current system was lacking. “We had a manual process where visitors were checked in by guards and receptionists, and, overall, there was a lack when it comes to tracking visitors throughout the building.”

“Our goals and motivating factors when it comes to the solution we had in mind can be summarized as less work and more functionality,” says Marc Spontack. Unlike most customers who find Savance Workplace by actively searching for a solution or through an integrator who has worked with Savance before, Motor City Electric was a bit different. “Marc saw a reposting about Savance’s Visitor Management solution deployed at another organization on Social Media that caught his eye. He and a long-time Savance team member had gone to grade school together, and now that connection led him to learn how Savance Workplace could help Motor City too,” explains Steve Bardocz, CEO and President of Savance. “It’s awesome to see social media work in such a positive way to help organizations like Motor City. In fact, we’re investing more of a commitment in social media with the primary goal of creating awareness and exposure since many organizations like Motor City have the same pain points, but haven’t stumbled across the easy button to solve them yet.”

Solution & Implementation:

Motor City Electric’s Savance Workplace solution consists of a custom-branded Visitor Management system with a ID/QR barcode scanner, allowing visitors to

  • Pre-register online prior to arriving onsite, and then completing the process by scanning a QR code, or
  • Scan their driver’s license/state ID to automatically add information into the system.

Both of these options result in a quicker and more efficient sign-in process for visitors. During COVID, the company was also utilizing a temperature scanner as part of a combined visitor management/health screening process.

As with most larger projects, there were some challenges during implementation, but nothing major. “We were able to work with Support and Engineering to take care of any issue that came up during the implementation phase,” says Marc Spontack. “Overall, communication has been key, no issues, and fast responses from the Savance Workplace team.”

Since implementing its Savance Workplace, Motor City Electric has seen a drastic improvement when it comes to visitor management and organization. “The overall functionality of the system is working out great for us, and coordination of visitors has improved dramatically” says Marc Spontack. “We highly recommend Savance to others looking for similar solutions.
