The Comprehensive Guide to Customer Hosted Server Migrations

Server Migration Guide

In this guide we will be going through the steps migrating from one Savance Server to a new one. You can see our recorded migration video here (Pending)

  1. Run Backup Database SQL Task on Savance Server Console
    1. Make sure this task has been properly setup with a correct backup pathway. Double click the Task to see what pathway it uses. It should not be ‘C:\’ as this pathway is illegal. Try ‘C:\Backup’ or similar
  2. Grab the newly created .Bak file and transfer it to the new server
  3. Start the new .exe install of Savance Workplace on your new server
    1. The Install will attempt to download any pre-requisites required
    2. Once prompted for your SQL Settings, Select whichever of the following options applies for your site
      1. Select ‘Install New SQL 2017 Instance’ if you do not have a SQL Instance installed on the server/a remote server
        1. Select ‘Install SQL Server Management Studio’ if it isn’t already installed as this tool is useful for troubleshooting
      2. Select ‘Use Existing SQL Server Instance’ if you already created your SQL Instance on Server 2019 or higher
    3. Select ‘Restore an EIOBoard Database from a SQL Backup File’ to load your previous server’s database into the new server
  4. Click Next and read any pop-up prompts that appear
  5. Click ‘Browse’ for your .Bak file taken from your previous server once prompted
  6. Select ‘Virtual Directory’ or ‘New Web Site’ based on your previous Server Settings
    1. ‘Virtual Directory’ means the EIOBoard website is stored in the Default Web Site and uses /EIOBoard in the URL
    2. ‘New Web Site’ doesn’t use /EIOBoard in the URL
      1. ‘New Web Site’ will prompt for ports which you can change via IIS after the installation as needed via the bindings
    3. Finally Click ‘Install’ to start the installation process. Please note any errors or pop-up messages
  7. Launch the EIOBoard/Workplace Server Admin by clicking ‘Finished’
  8. Open the Server’s IIS and ensure all bindings match what your site requires port wise along with any SSL Certifications
    1. Click the EIOBoard binding on the right-side menu and test your browser login
  9. Switch all Desktop, Outlook, and Kiosk applications to the new server IP, DNS name, or Website
    1. You can use the guide here to perform these changes
  10. Setup/Check all integrations, active directory settings, email settings, and other settings within the EIOBoard/Workplace Server Admin Console
